The Alphabet's Hidden Relatives
Why Artificial Intelligence Just Uncovered Surprising Architectural Links Between Ancient Scripts Across Continents
When neural networks are set loose on the visual architecture of ancient writing systems, they care nothing for history, geography, or the grand narratives of empires. Stripped of context, computer vision models simply look at glyph shapes, structural parsing, and the permissible transformations of lines over time.
Yet when these algorithms analyze the geometric skeletons of ancient scripts, striking connections emerge across vast continental divides. Recent computational analysis, for instance, reveals a profound structural similarity between the ancient Ethiopic script and the Armenian alphabet—a pairing that leaps across expected cultural boundaries.
Historians do not need to invent a direct line of transmission to make sense of this. We know that the creator of the Armenian alphabet, Mesrop Mashtots, traveled extensively through the Middle East, and historical records confirm ancient cultural contact between Ethiopia and regions like Jerusalem, Egypt, and Syria. The intellectual and commercial currents of the ancient world were wider and deeper than surviving texts often let on.
Still, computational archaeology demands a certain discipline. Finding that two writing systems share a deep geometric kinship does not prove that one directly copied the other. Deep neural networks excel at mapping structural resemblances and restoring fragmented inscriptions, but full decipherment remains fiercely debated—a stark reminder that recognizing a pattern is not the same as reading a language.
