Why We Clean for Spring
Why Ancient Seasonal Cleaning Habits Survived the Modern Era
Long before modern sanitization and central heating, surviving the cold months required keeping every possible bit of heat trapped inside. Houses were sealed tight, windows stayed shut, and indoor air grew thick with the steady burn of hearths and lamps. By the time the weather finally turned, homes were caked in a heavy layer of soot, dust, and winter grime that demanded an all-out physical reckoning.
The arrival of warm air offered the first real chance to throw open the doors and windows to vent out months of stale air. But what began as sheer atmospheric necessity quickly evolved into something more deliberate. Across cultures and centuries, clearing out the accumulated grit of winter became a deeply ingrained ritual of renewal.
In Jewish tradition, the thorough sweep for Passover serves as a physical and symbolic act of liberation, rooting the cleanup in a specific historical story by clearing out all traces of leavened bread. In India, meticulous cleaning rituals greet festivals like Diwali to welcome the goddess Lakshmi, or prepare the ground for the vibrant colors of Holi. These traditions share a common thread: they use the tangible labor of tidying as a transition point, a mechanism for shaking off the heavier moods of the colder seasons and clearing space for new beginnings.
While modern habits are sometimes attributed to an innate biological urge or simply the desire to clear out indoor allergens, the underlying impulse remains surprisingly durable. We no longer spend winters huddled behind sealed shutters against coal smoke, yet the instinct to fling open the windows and wipe the slate clean persists. Long after the practical need vanished, the ritual stayed, proving that the desire for a fresh start is one of the hardest things to sweep away.
