The Ghost in the Audio
How neural codecs are killing the concept of a 'digital sound file'
For decades, a digital sound file was a digital copy of a physical wave. Whether packaged as an MP3, an AAC, or an Opus stream, the underlying logic remained the same. Algorithms chopped audio into mathematical representations of frequencies, discarded what human ears supposedly could not hear, and neatly packed the remainder into a file. When played back, the system simply unpacked the math and drew the wave back out. It was a digital photocopy.
Neural audio codecs have quietly broken that model. Systems like SoundStream and EnCodec do not store waveforms at all. Instead, they use deep learning models to compress audio into discrete tokens via residual vector quantization, shifting the entire enterprise from signal fidelity to semantic reconstruction. Modern versions go a step further, absorbing features from self-supervised models like HuBERT so the encoded tokens carry actual semantic content rather than mere spectral detail.
When a neural codec plays back a file, it is not strictly decoding anything. It is re-imagining it. The receiver uses generative models like diffusion or GANs to synthesize the sound from scratch based on compact latent instructions. The audio you hear is effectively a collaborative hallucination generated on the fly.
This efficiency comes at a steep price in processing power and battery life, leaving neural codecs trailing established standards like Opus in real-time resource management. But the philosophical shift is already complete. We have moved from a world where digital audio is preserved to one where it is merely interpreted, raising an unresolved question about authenticity in professional contexts. When the sound you hear is a fresh invention rather than a played-back recording, the traditional concept of the digital sound file begins to dissolve.
