Ontology of the Digital Ghost
How virtual objects force us to redefine what we call 'real'
Virtual objects have an independent existence. They interact with us, and we interact with them, which makes it increasingly difficult to dismiss them as mere illusions or clever tricks of the eye.
When we step into a virtual environment, our brains do not treat it as a pleasant fiction. The brain's predictive coding mechanisms are readily fooled, generating a genuine sense of presence and embodiment. More importantly, the cognitive and emotional responses that follow—arousal, valence, and the way memories are encoded—are functionally similar to those triggered by physical stimuli made of actual atoms.
This collapse of the traditional binary has forced a philosophical reckoning. Thinkers like David Chalmers argue for a form of Virtual Digitalism, proposing that virtual objects are fully real, independent digital entities in their own right. Against this, skeptics like McDonnell and Wildman defend Virtual Fictionalism, maintaining that these objects are merely fictional constructs we collectively agree to imagine into existence.
Yet even as scholars debate whether these digital forms deserve a definitive classification or remain stubbornly unclassifiable, reality itself is expanding to accommodate them. After all, if reality is not exclusively defined by physical atoms, and if immaterial entities like thoughts and digital objects possess their own distinct modes of existence, then the digital ghost is not a fake at all. It is simply a new resident of the real.
