The Narrative Code

How Algorithms Learned to Read Stories Like Humans

When a computer reads a story, it does not get lost in the prose or feel the suspense. Instead, it builds a skeleton. Through computational narratology, large language models can parse free-form text and translate it into something entirely mathematical: a directed graph of cause and effect where every event is a node and every narrative turn is an edge connecting them.

This turns the fluid experience of a narrative into a structural map. To measure whether a story actually holds together, algorithms evaluate the mean semantic association between contiguous sentences using latent semantic analysis, while temporal coherence is tracked through consistency in tense, aspect, and the strategic placement of temporal adverbials.

When these causal graphs grow too complex, they can be abstracted into broader event clusters. These clusters do not just reduce computational weight; they begin to outline generic inferential rules for how stories operate.

Yet, this engineering of plot leaves an open question. Whether these mathematical maps and graphs can ever truly capture the thematic richness of human storytelling remains a moving target of ongoing research. The algorithm can chart the mechanics of what happens next, but what stays unquantified is why any of it truly matters to us.
