When Scarcity Reverses Demand

Why Giffen Goods Defy the Core Law of Supply and Demand

Economics rests on a foundation so intuitive it feels like a law of nature: when something gets more expensive, people buy less of it. A higher price trims demand, while a lower price stretches it.

Yet, tucked away in the machinery of microeconomics is a bizarre exception that turns this logic entirely on its head. A Giffen good is an essential, non-luxury staple that defies the downward-sloping demand curve. As its price rises, so does the demand for it.

To understand how a good can become its own worst enemy, you have to look at near-subsistence contexts where consumers lack affordable alternatives. When people spend the vast majority of their budget on a single primary staple, a price hike triggers a violent squeeze on their purchasing power.

This sets up a tug-of-war between two economic forces. The substitution effect should push consumers toward cheaper options, but there are no cheaper options. Instead, the income effect takes over with staggering force. When the price of the staple food climbs, consumers suddenly find themselves too poor to afford anything else. They must instantly cut out better, more expensive foods like meat entirely. To scrape together enough basic calories to survive, they are forced to buy even more of the very staple that just got more expensive.

It is a rare paradox born of pure desperation, where the act of a good becoming costlier strips away a consumer's financial margin, leaving them with no choice but to double down on the very thing draining their pockets.
