The Lyrical Simplification Trap

Why popular song lyrics have become statistically simpler over the last six decades

Over the past six decades, popular song lyrics have quietly shed their vocabulary. Computational analysis across generations of music reveals a consistent downward drift in lexical richness, paired with a rising tide of repetition. Modern songs lean heavily on recurring lines and expansive choruses, favoring structures that are instantly transparent and effortless to follow.

Yet this simplification has not emptied lyrics of feeling; it has merely redirected it. While vocabulary narrowed, negative sentiment and anger-related words saw a steady increase across most genres. The emotional temperature rose even as the linguistic architecture grew more spare.

Researchers suspect this shift mirrors how we consume music today. With the rise of streaming platforms, songs increasingly function as background utility—a sonic wallpaper accompanying our daily lives. Complexity demands attention, but simplicity blends into the environment.

This might be an accidental feature of modern listening, or it might be a functional one. Low-information audio—characterized by high repetition and a narrow cognitive load—actually minimizes conflict with our attentional resources, subtly enhancing our performance on other tasks. The music we ignore may be the easiest music to live alongside.

Complexity, of course, is rarely a straight line. While overall lexical variety declined, sub-metrics tell more complicated stories; the concreteness of lyrics dropped for decades before reversing course entirely in the nineties. Music does not simply dumb itself down in unison. But the broad gravitational pull toward repetition remains. As songs become the seamless background hum of a streaming world, they have traded a sprawling vocabulary for a sharper, simpler emotional punch.
